Starr McAuley Long (born 1970) is the Executive Director for Shroud of the Avatar. A long time collaborator with “Lord British” (Richard Garriott) at Origin Systems (1992–2000) and Destination Games (2000–2008), Starr joined Portalarium in 2013 shortly after the successful Kickstarter. Starr was the original director of Ultima Online and is credited for being the driving force to Origin Systems moving into the multiplayer market. He is credited for coining the term “MMORPG” (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game).
As an Executive Producer
Starr’s primary role in Portalarium is to keep the entire process of game design on track and prioritize tasks when necessary to ensure a quality, stable, and enjoyable product is available on a monthly basis. Since the company’s initial release of an early Pre Alpha state game in December of 2013 they have made an on-time release every month with new content and have seen zero unplanned downtime of their game servers.
Starr is married with a daughter who has been seen assisting him practice for his duel to the death (which the Lake won!), a wife who has assisted in keeping him orderly in his chaos (the tears of the Avatars make him stronger!), and is often found to be a bit squeamish in the sight of blood (yes, that reliquary has blood in it… just look closer!)
In an ever steady method he spends countless hours reviewing the communities feedback and requests on the official Shroud of the Avatar forums where he places his updated monthly and quarterly releases on a regular basis. He is also the author of many of the questionnaires given to the Dev+ community where they are able to have a few days to preview information before it is made available to the public forums.
